While we may still associate Las Vegas with lost retirements, indulgent buffets, faded cowboys and Martin Scorcese, I can assure you that the mirage section of this city known as “The Strip” stands at the forefront of new technologies. First, we visited the Arte Museum at CITYCENTER and experienced its Musee d’Orsay Exhibit. This is a great leap forward in the realm of immersive art exhibits. No longer just an observer and interpreter of art, one can truly feel integrated into the palette. For a few moments, our minds are juiced with a burst of quantum energy from the merging of surround visions and music. I’m reminded of the famous quote from the Russian-born artist Vasily Kandinsky:
Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul.
Above is the Monet segment set to Edvard Greig’s “Morning.”
Here we experience the art of Van Gogh, Starry Night transformed from constellations to light waves.
Would Monet and Van Gogh appreciate this enhanced interpretation of the art they suffered for? We’ll never know, but they would certainly bask in satisfaction for all the financial suffering they saved herds of amateur gamblers, drawing them away from the casinos.
The next day, we visited Fantasy Lab Las Vegas: Colors of Mexico, an exhibit hidden downstairs in a fashion mall, breathing desperately needed soul into its mundane surroundings. This is an immersive journey into the colorful, surreal world of Mexico, staffed by passionate caretakers eager to share their culture.
Here, abstract Mexican art and architectural patterns come alive in multi-colored patterns.
Next is a floor to ceiling panorama featuring natural, urban and cultural landscapes. This reminded us of the Raphael Rooms at the Vatican where similarly every surface is utilized in the presentation of integrated images. When these private papal residences were created in the early sixteenth century, they gave the impression of a novel, transformative framework for integrating beauty, knowledge, mystery and ideals. Perhaps we’re on the verge of a new era as well, spearheaded by these bold artists/technicians.
